Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic. You can chat with it, ask it to write code, analyze documents, summarize articles, and much more. But now Claude can do something fundamentally different: it can use your computer.
This feature is called Computer Use — and it's exactly what it sounds like. Claude can click buttons, open apps, type into fields, browse the web, and navigate your desktop. Not through special integrations or APIs. Directly, by looking at your screen and moving the mouse.
What is Claude?
If you're new here: Claude is a large language model (LLM) from Anthropic, available at claude.ai. It's in the same category as ChatGPT and Gemini, but with a particular focus on safety, nuance, and working effectively in long, complex tasks.
Claude comes in different versions — Haiku (fast and light), Sonnet (the sweet spot for most tasks), and Opus (the most capable). The interface you use to chat with Claude is called Claude.ai. The desktop app you install on your Mac or PC is called Claude Desktop.
What is Computer Use?
Computer Use is a Claude feature that lets Claude interact with your actual computer screen — not just respond in a chat window.
When you enable it, Claude can:
- Open applications on your Mac
- Click buttons and navigate menus
- Type into any input field
- Browse websites in Chrome
- Read documents from your local files
- Combine information from multiple apps into one output
Think of it as Claude becoming a hands-on assistant rather than just a chat bot. You describe what you want done, and Claude actually does it — by working through your apps the way a person would.
This is different from things like ChatGPT plugins or Claude connectors (which connect to APIs). Computer Use means Claude is literally watching your screen and moving the cursor.
How Does Computer Use Actually Work?
Claude takes screenshots of your screen as it works, then decides what to click or type next based on what it sees. It follows a priority system:
- Connectors first — if you have direct integrations (Gmail, Google Drive, Slack), Claude uses those. Faster and more reliable.
- Browser navigation — if a connector isn't available, Claude opens Chrome and navigates the web.
- Screen interaction — for desktop apps without any integration, Claude clicks and types directly on your screen.
This tiered approach means Claude always tries the most efficient path first and only falls back to raw screen control when needed.
Who Can Use It?
Computer Use is currently in research preview and requires:
- A Pro or Max plan on Claude.ai
- The Claude Desktop app installed on macOS
- Windows support is coming soon — not available yet
How to Enable Computer Use
Step 1. Download the latest Claude Desktop from claude.com/download
Step 2. Open Settings → General → Desktop app

Step 4. Open Cowork or Claude Code from the sidebar
Step 5. Ask Claude to do something that involves your computer apps
Claude will ask for your permission before touching each new application. You approve once per app.
What Can You Actually Do With It?
A few real examples of things Claude can handle with Computer Use:
- Competitive research — "Go through these 5 local files, find the competitor pricing data, and compile it into a comparison table."
- Testing — "Open the phone simulator and test the onboarding flow for UX issues."
- Data entry — "Pull the Q1 numbers from our Notion and fill in the budget spreadsheet."
- Internal tools — Use apps that don't have any Claude integration at all.
Basically: anything that requires jumping between applications, pulling from multiple sources, or navigating specialized tools that have no API.
Permissions and Safety
Before Claude touches any app on your computer, it asks. You get a per-app permission dialog. Some categories — investment platforms, cryptocurrency apps — are blocked by default and can't be unlocked.
There's also a review layer that scans for prompt injection attacks — attempts by malicious content on a webpage to hijack Claude's actions mid-task.
That said, the feature is still in early preview and the documentation is clear: the safeguards aren't perfect.
What to Avoid
Claude can see everything on your visible screen. If your email is open and Claude is reading a spreadsheet next to it, Claude sees both. Keep this in mind.
Don't use Computer Use for:
- Online banking or investment accounts
- Legal contracts or sensitive legal work
- Health records or medical portals
- Apps that store other people's personal data
Good practices:
- Close sensitive files before starting a task
- Start with simple, low-stakes tasks while you learn how it behaves
- Stay present and watch what Claude is doing
- Stick to apps you trust and understand
The feature is powerful but early. Treat it as a capable assistant that still needs supervision.

Both features can use Computer Use under the hood, but they're meant for different contexts:
